The Poudre River Trail is a ten-foot-wide concrete path that follows the Cache la Poudre for just over 21 miles, from Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley to Highway 392 at the west edge of Windsor, where it meets Larimer County’s River Bluffs Open Space. It was finished in December 2008 and is run by the Poudre River Trail Corridor, a non-profit working under an agreement between the Town of Windsor, Weld County and the City of Greeley. Since June 2026, when Larimer County opened the last gap between Timnath and Windsor, it is part of 45 continuous paved miles from Bellvue to Greeley.
In Windsor the place to start is Eastman Park. This is how far you get in each direction from its lot, using the distances the trail’s managers publish.
Eastman Park is 25 acres at Eastman Park Drive and 7th Street (County Road 17) in the south-east corner of town; the Town’s address for it is 7025 Eastman Park Drive. The trail runs along the south side of the park, south of the pavilion. The corridor’s description of the trailhead: ample parking, indoor restrooms with flush toilets and running water, a drinking fountain to fill a bottle, benches along the river, picnic tables, a playground and a skate park. The Town’s park rules put park hours at 5 am–10 pm. Poudre Pooch Park, the fenced dog park, is on the west side.
Just east of the park, after the first bridge, is the Treasure Island Demonstration Garden, kept by the Town with the Weld County master gardeners.
The corridor divides the trail into 13 named sections, each marked by a granite story post, and its brochure map gives a length for each. Eastman Park is the boundary between the Oxbow & Overland Trail section to the west and the Great Western Farm section to the east. Adding the sections up gives these one-way distances; double them for the return.
| From Eastman Park | One way | Round trip | What is there |
|---|---|---|---|
| East to the Kodak Watchable Wildlife trailhead | 2.7 miles | 5.4 miles | Parking, signs, portable toilet, no water |
| West to the Colorado Boulevard (County Road 13) trailhead at Frank State Wildlife Area | 2.5 miles | 5 miles | Parking, signs, no restroom |
| West to River Bluffs Open Space, the Larimer County trailhead | 4.5 miles | 9 miles | Lot, restroom, drinking fountain, picnic tables, bike pump |
| East to the Kodak Bridge, the end of the Kodak section | 5.8 miles | 11.6 miles | A 100-foot bridge over the river |
| East to Island Grove Regional Park, Greeley | 17.3 miles | Restrooms, water, shade |
East, 2.7 miles to Kodak. The Great Western Farm section leaves the park, passes under 7th Street and follows streets through the Water Valley development before running beside the Great Western Railway along Highway 257 and crossing the highway. The Kodak trailhead is reached by car from Windsor by going south on County Road 19 / Highway 257 just under two miles from Main Street and turning east. From there the Kodak section runs another 3.1 level miles within sight of the river to the bridge at its east end.
West, 2.5 miles to Frank State Wildlife Area. The Oxbow & Overland Trail section climbs into the hills south of the river and looks down on the oxbows; the corridor calls this the steepest part of the whole trail and still “only a gentle climb, and only for a short distance.” It crosses the B.H. Eaton Ditch and skirts active gravel pits. The wildlife area, 326 acres with several ponds managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife, allows fishing from the trail side of Bass Lake and no hunting or camping. Its trailhead is half a mile south of Highway 392 on Colorado Boulevard.
West, 4.5 miles to River Bluffs. From County Road 13 the Bison Arroyo section, a mile of nearly level trail through a grove and between two gravel-pit lakes, is named for the Kaplan-Hoover bison bone bed in the arroyos to the south, a National Register archaeological site. It passes under Highway 392 into Larimer County’s River Bluffs section, a mile along the base of the bluffs to a bridge over the Poudre and the trailhead. River Bluffs is day use only, closed sunset to sunrise, with a restroom the corridor says is closed in winter, a drinking fountain and dog bags. By car from Windsor: Highway 392 west from 7th Street for two miles to County Road 13, north half a mile to County Road 32E, then west three-quarters of a mile, entrance on the left.
Beyond River Bluffs. The trail now continues north and west to Timnath and Fort Collins; Larimer County’s trail page carries the updates.
Granite markers stand every quarter mile. The letters read PT, W for Weld County or L for Larimer County, and the number is the distance in miles from the county line at Weld County Road 13, 2.5 miles east of I-25, counting upward eastward; W-3.0 is three miles east of the line. Give the nearest marker to 911 if you need help.
The corridor’s rules: trail hours are dawn to dusk; non-motorized use only, except that Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are allowed; no horses; dogs on leash at all times with waste packed out; no swimming for people or dogs; no alcohol, glass, camping or fires; park only in designated areas. Larimer County’s River Bluffs page says the same of e-bikes, Class 1 and 2 allowed and Class 3 prohibited. Cyclists and skaters yield to walkers, faster to slower, and a bell or a “passing on your left” is expected.
Restrooms and drinking water are at Island Grove, Eastman Park and River Bluffs only; every other lot has a portable toilet and no water. The trail is not maintained in winter, so expect ice in the shade, and it can close for flooding in early summer and after storms. The corridor’s alerts page lists current closures and points to the state’s COTREX map for the latest word. The trail office is 970-381-6250 for anything that is not an emergency. The Town’s trails page counts more than 40 miles of trail in Windsor altogether and has the interactive town map.
